Warner hits emotional SCG ton v India

David Warner scored an emotional hundred on the first day of the fourth Test against India at the SCG on Tuesday.

Warner pulled Mohammed Shami through mid-wicket for four in the first ball of the 41st over as he moved onto three figures, just before 2pm.

The 27-year-old let out a shout of joy, jumped and punched the air as he ran down the wicket. He then raised his helmet to the sky and kissed the Australian crest in a tribute to good mate Phil Hughes.

His joy was short-lived, however.

He added just one more run before he was caught at gully by Murali Vijay off Ravichandran Ashwin to leave Australia 1-200. Chris Rogers was not out on 91.

When he moved onto 63 earlier in the day, Warner raised his bat to the heavens and kissed the SCG wicket adjacent to the one being used for this Test, where Hughes was felled at the Randwick end.

Hughes was 63 not out when he was hit in Sheffield Shield game between NSW and South Australia at the SCG in November.

This is the first international held at the SCG since Hughes’ death.

It was Warner’s third hundred of the series, after he scored 145 and 102 in the first Test in Adelaide.
