Warner fit for SCG Test

David Warner has declared himself a certain starter for the SCG Test against India, despite continuing to battle thumb and arm injuries.

Warner was hit on the on the thumb in the second Test at the ‘Gabba and suffered a blow on the arm in net practice in preparation for last week’s drawn MCG Test.

However the Australian opener is desperate to play in the fourth and final Test against India at the SCG, starting on Tuesday.

It will be the first Test held at the ground since Phillip Hughes was struck by a bouncer at the venue in November.

“I’m fine, I’m ready to go, the arm is sore but I just have to play through that pain like I did for the last game,” Warner said after training on Sunday.

“It is not going to be in the back of my mind, that is for sure.”

Warner, who was on the SCG alongside Australian teammates Shane Watson, Brad Haddin and Nathan Lyon when Hughes was struck in a Sheffield Shield match between NSW and South Australia said the home side was bracing for a tough Test.

“It is going to be emotional, I know for myself it will be, just walking out there today, just brought back memories,” he said.

“It is always going to be in the back of my mind, every time I walk out there, every time I come here, that’s just the way it is, any time I’ve got nothing on my mind, I will be thinking about it.

“It’s one of those things where he would want us to keep going and keep smiling, and playing the game that we love and the game that he loved.”

Warner’s inclusion is a boost to the Australian side who have lost Mitchell Johnson with a hamstring injury for the Test, while Shane Watson left training early on Sunday due to a stomach virus.

Australia take an unassailable 2-0 lead into Sydney in the best-of-four series after victories in Adelaide and Brisbane and a draw in Melbourne.
