Warner backs Lyon as a match-winner

Early strikes, then spin a web – that’s Australia’s plan for a final-day victory in the first Test.

The home players, at 5-290 in their second innings, hold a 363 run lead over India.

Australia’s total was underpinned by David Warner’s 102, his sixth ton in his past 11 Test innings.

And Warner and his teammates will turn to Nathan Lyon at Adelaide Oval on Saturday when Australia press for a 1-0 series lead.

Lyon snared five wickets in India’s first dig and Warner backed the offspinner to do it again.

“It’s hard to score when the ball gets older, there’s a nice rough area out there for Nathan Lyon to bowl at,” Warner said.

“We saw that in the first innings. He was hitting it virtually every delivery.

“That is going to be the key for us.

“We’re going to try to take early wickets with that new ball and once it gets older we’ll try to use the conditions.”

Warner said Lyon’s first-innings haul evidenced his improvement as a bowler.

“We have seen how much he has evolved in the past 12 to 18 months,” he said.

“He has worked hard at his game. He has now got a five-wicket haul.

“There’s no reason why he can’t come out with his tail up and help us take these 10 wickets.

“Given this wicket … there will definitely be 10 chances.”
