Warner backs Australia’s batting balance

Australia have their batting line-up nailed ahead of the World Cup finals, opener David Warner says.

With one Pool A match remaining against winless Scotland in Hobart on Saturday, the hosts are already locked in for quarter-final at Adelaide Oval next Friday against the winner of Sunday’s Pakistan versus Ireland match.

Australia’s batting line-up has been tweaked over the past few weeks, mostly due to the axing and subsequent reinstatement of allrounder Shane Watson and the return to fitness of skipper Michael Clarke.

Warner backed the line-up that steered Australia to a 64-run victory over Sri Lanka on Sunday at the SCG when Watson, mostly sent out at No.3 in recent seasons, batted at No.6.

Boundary-hitters Glenn Maxwell, James Faulkner and Brad Haddin complement the more circumspect Steve Smith at No.3 and Clarke at No.4.

“With the team we’ve got and the balance we’ve got, we showed the other night with the bat what can happen,” Warner told reporters in Hobart on Thursday.

“With Smith and Clarke to come in and anchor the role there, and then you see Maxwell, Faulkner and Haddin.

“If we’re two or three for 250 we could finish off very well.”

Smith, coming off a polished 72 against Sri Lanka, has become a crucial calming influence in his short time at first drop.

“The head on his shoulders is very good, he’s very smart, when he’s out there he’s on the ball all the time,” said Warner.

“When we play that style of aggression and one person is going (well), we have to rotate the strike for the other person no matter what.

“He does a great job at the moment at No.3 and will continue to do a good job at No.3.”

Warner added that Haddin’s clean ball-striking provides handy depth at No.8.

“He comes out and knows from ball one what he needs to do,” Warner said.

“He’s one of the cleanest strikers in the world, especially down the middle order, and he knows his game so well he knows what areas of the ground to hit the ball.

“It just adds another string to our bow that he’s down the bottom of the order there and capable of clearing the fence.”

Australia are training at Bellerive Oval on Thursday afternoon following a three-day break.
