WA need seven more wickets to win Shield

Western Australia need to embark on a wicket spree to win the Sheffield Shield final against Victoria, who are 3-108 at tea on the final day.

Opener Rob Quiney (53) dug in for the Bushrangers, notching up his half century on Wednesday at Bellerive Oval where his side have closed their victory target to 225 runs.

But just before the break, he pushed at an Andrew Tye (1-23) delivery to be caught behind.

With 36 overs remaining, Western Australia must bowl Victoria out before stumps to win the Shield.

A draw will hand the Bushrangers the prize.

Western Australia’s three big wickets started with Chris Rogers (17), who was bowled by Nathan Coulter-Nile (1-15).

The breakthrough broke a 50-run partnership with Quiney and brought Marcus Stoinis (eight) to the middle.

Ten overs after lunch, Stoinis stood his ground as WA celebrated his wicket.

The caught-and-bowled dismissal by Ashton Agar (1-25) was referred to the third umpire, with replays showing the ball popped up after hitting Stoinis on the foot.

The wicket left Victoria at 2-70.

The Warriors have used a mix of pace and spin, with allrounder Shaun Marsh (0-0) brought on for an over just before tea.

Earlier on Wednesday, WA declared at 2-293, with opener Marcus Harris (158no) remaining unbeaten on his highest first-class score.

David Hussey (13no) will resume with Peter Handscomb (6no) after the break.
