WA hold on for three wicket one-day win

Western Australia have held their nerve against leg-spinner Adam Zampa to claim a three wicket, bonus point one-dayn cup win over South Australia at the Gabba on Wednesday.

The Warriors looked set to cruise to victory at 0-69 chasing a paltry 148 before the Redbacks hit back hard with the ball thanks to Zampa (4-18 off 10 overs).

Western Australia at one stage lost 4-4 and 6-23 overall before forgotten former Test allrounder Ashton Agar (29 not out) and Adam Voges (25) steadied the ship with a 41-run seventh wicket stand.

Agar hit the winning runs, guiding WA to 7-150 in the 38th over by thrashing a four off Trent Lawford who dropped and almost ran out the left-hander on three.

Fresh from being rested from their last one-day game, fast bowler Shaun Tait (2-39 off 10) was at his menacing best for the Redbacks.

But the most damage was caused by SA’s baby-faced leggie Zampa on the traditionally fast bowler’s paradise.

Man of the match Zampa was on a hat-trick with figures of 3-2 when he trapped former teammate Michael Klinger in front for a six-ball duck and next delivery enticed a high deflection from Sam Whiteman as WA faltered.

It could have been worse for WA – Agar was dropped off Zampa on three by a diving Lawford.

Agar started to walk off in disgust and was almost run out as Lawford recovered from his missed chance to fire the ball at the stumps but to no avail.

Earlier, late hitting by Lawford (61 off 44 balls) could not stop the Redbacks being bowled out for just 147 in the 28th over.

It was more bad news for a South Australian outfit which had lost both its opening games and then captain Johan Botha and wicketkeeper Tim Ludeman (hamstring) before the loss to WA.

Stand-in SA skipper Tom Cooper (33) tried to provide resistance after WA left-arm quicks Jason Behrendorff (3-38) and Joel Paris (3-34) ripped through the top order.
