WA eye Shield final success v Victoria

Western Australia will look to win their first Sheffield Shield title in 15 years when the final against favourites Victoria starts in Hobart on Saturday.

Led by Player of the Year and the competition’s leading run scorer, skipper Adam Voges, the Warriors are hoping for a better result from the five-day fixture than their 2014 final appearance which ended in a draw, handing victory to NSW.

Voges said it’s been a strong year for WA with all sections of the order contributing.

“Hopefully we can play really well over the next five days and top off what would be a perfect season,” he told reporters.

But Voges conceded the Victorians are in good form and finished on top of the competition ladder and their batsmen will be firing runs from the fruitful Bellerive pitch.

“It’s probably going to be a fight and a grind for five days and I think that isn’t a bad thing for us, we’ve shown throughout this season our fighting qualities when things get tough,” he said.

Bushrangers captain Matthew Wade said his team boasts a valuable mix of youth and experience which helped them rise from last place in the 2013-14 season.

“Going from last to first, those younger players have made a huge difference, and then our experienced players have definitely played a lot better,” he said.

Play starts at Bellerive Oval at 10.30am (AEDT).
