WA batsman overcomes hit to the head

West Australia batsman Tom Beaton overcame a hit to the helmet to guide the Warriors to 2-106 at tea on day two of their Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria at the WACA Ground.

Beaton was on seven when he was struck flush on the grille after ducking into a rising delivery from Dan Christian.

With the tragic death of Phillip Hughes still on everyone’s minds, players and umpires rushed in to check on Beaton’s welfare.

Beaton, who will play for the Melbourne Renegades in the BBL this summer, was able to shake off the blow to make it to tea unbeaten on 18, while Adam Voges is on 44.

Earlier in the day, Victoria lost their last four wickets for just 11 runs to be dismissed for 350.

Victoria were on track to post a score in excess of 400 after moving to 6-339 early on Wednesday.

But Simon Mackin’s introduction into the attack in the 10th over of the day reaped instant rewards, with the 22-year-old paceman removing Matthew Wade (68) and Chris Tremain in consecutive balls.

Scott Boland was able to fend away the hat-trick ball, but it didn’t take Mackin long to send him packing as well.

Mackin finished with 3-55 after going wicketless on Tuesday, while Michael Hogan also snared three wickets.

Bushrangers opener Rob Quiney top scored with 92, while Aaron Finch (53 off 51 balls) and Marcus Stoinis (58) also posted half-centuries.

WA was struggling at 2-45 in reply after Michael Klinger (five) and Cameron Bancroft (29) fell, and Beaton was lucky to survive a first-ball LBW appeal from Marcus Stoinis.

Beaton has looked shaky throughout his 55-ball knock, but Voges has been in fine touch, with the WA skipper cracking seven boundaries in his quick-fire innings.
