WA 0-84 at lunch v Vic in Shield final

Paceman Peter Siddle is helping Victoria keep the screws on Western Australia who are 0-84 at lunch on day one of their Sheffield Shield final.

Victoria, as the ladder leaders, only need a draw to win the Shield, while WA require outright victory.

Siddle conceded just 11 runs from his eight overs bowled during Saturday’s first session at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval on Saturday, including four maidens.

Siddle opened the Bushrangers’ attack in combination with James Pattinson (0-31) who has returned to the squad from a hamstring injury.

The Test veteran nearly made an early breakthrough for Victoria in the seventh over, when he had WA opener Cameron Bancroft (40 not out) playing defensively.

The ball popped up at short leg, but Rob Quiney couldn’t hold the tough catch.

It would have been a prized wicket, with Bancroft coming to Hobart after making a double-ton against NSW in the match which handed his side a finals berth.

Opening with the 22-year old is Marcus Harris (44 not out) who is poised to reach his half century after lunch.

His knock already includes four boundaries and a six.

West Australian captain Adam Voges earlier chose to bat after winning the toss for the five-day fixture.

Batsman Cameron White was left out of Victoria’s final XI after being named in the Hobart squad earlier this week.

The international hasn’t played for the Bushrangers past two Shield matches and on Saturday was listed No.14.
