Voges double ton puts Bulls on back foot

Western Australia skipper Adam Voges cracked an unbeaten double century to set Queensland a daunting run chase in the Sheffield Shield clash at the WACA Ground.

The Warriors declared at 5-447 in their second innings, with Adam Voges finishing unbeaten on 235 and Sam Whiteman on 74.

It left Queensland with a victory target of 301 off a minimum of 41 overs on a batting deck that has offered little assistance to the bowlers.

Voges cracked 31 boundaries in his 457-minute stay at the crease, with his knock lifting WA back into the contest after they were left with a 147-run first-innings deficit.

Queensland skipper James Hopes snared the key scalps of Shaun Marsh (47) and Mitch Marsh (27) before lunch.

But Whiteman and Voges held firm from that point on to combine for an unbeaten 162-run stand, with the pair upping the run rate in preparation for the declaration.

Hopes was Queensland’s best bowler with figures of 3-73 from 30.3 overs.

But he didn’t seem all too happy at how long it took for WA to declare.

With WA’s lead on 299, Hopes ordered all of his fielders near the boundary in a bid to stem the runs, and send Voges a clear message that it was time to declare.

One ball later, WA declared.

Voges’ previous best first-class score was 180, but he smashed past that in his finest ever performance.
