Virat Kohli has confirmed his place in the record books, with the combative India skipper adding another century to his mountain of runs this summer.

Kohli finished 140 not out at stumps on day three of the SCG Test, bringing his tally in the four-Test series to 639 runs.

In doing so, he broke Rahul Dravid’s record for most runs by an Indian in a Test series against Australia.

He joins Wally Hammond (1928-29) and Herbert Sutcliffe (1924-25) as the only visiting batsmen to score four hundreds in an Australian series.

Kohli was booed to the crease by some sections of the SCG crowd on Thursday, as he was in Melbourne.

But the 26-year-old, who has clashed with Australia since the series started in Adelaide, won over the Sydneysiders by peeling off another ton.

Kohli was given a standing ovation when he steered a ball back past paceman Josh Hazlewood in the 97th over, reaching triple figures for the fourth time in the series.

He scored 115 and 141 in the first Test at Adelaide Oval, putting his side within reach of a remarkable victory on day five as they chased 364.

Kohli crashed his highest Test score, 169, at the MCG where he had a number of heated confrontations with Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson.

“He is a real competitor, he loves a stoush and … he’s got the game to back it up,” Mark Taylor said while calling the game for the Nine Network.

Taylor added India would be looking at a 4-0 loss in the series if not for Kohli, noting the right-hander has scored all of his runs under pressure.

Kohli was India’s stand-in skipper in Adelaide, while he was promoted to captain following MS Dhoni’s retirement from Test cricket after the draw in Melbourne.
