Victoria set WA 405 for Shield win

Western Australia have been set 405 for victory in their Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria at the WACA Ground.

Victoria declared at 3-341 late on day three in their second innings, with Dan Christian (105 not out off 99 balls), Cameron White (91) and Marcus Stoinis (99) posting big totals.

WA were bowled out for 287 in their first innings, and face a huge task to secure outright victory with a little over a day remaining.

Warriors spinner Ashton Agar bore the brunt of the damage, with the two-Test spinner finishing the innings with 0-105 from 11 overs.

For one particular delivery, Christian smacked Agar into the second tier of the John Inverarity stand, with Michael Hogan taking several minutes to find the ball.

White and Christian combined for a 180-run stand that completely obliterated WA’s attack in 33-degree heat.

Before that, Stoinis cracked 16 fours and one six during his entertaining 92-ball knock.

The 25-year-old has been in hot form this summer, scoring an unbeaten 84 against NSW in his first Shield match of the season, before posting 90 against South Australia last month.

Stoinis also scored 58 in the first innings against WA.

Earlier in the day, WA skipper Adam Voges posted his 20th first-class century, but he was left in a world of pain a few balls later after being struck in the groin by a searing Chris Tremain delivery.

Voges recovered from the hit, but he was out for 101 next over as WA lost their last five wickets for 41 runs to hand Victoria a 63-run lead.

Victoria collected 2.83 first-innings bonus points compared to WA’s 1.37, meaning the Bushrangers will leapfrog the Warriors into top spot unless WA manages an unlikely outright win.
