Vics staring down defeat against SA

South Australia remain in control heading into the final day of their Sheffield Shield cricket match against Victoria at the MCG.

The Bushrangers are on the verge of their second-straight outright loss, leading by only 128 runs with two wickets in hand.

They are 8-353 in their second innings after Aaron Finch made a welcome return to Shield form with 97 and Glenn Maxwell also scored an impressive 82.

But the Bushrangers bled wickets after lunch and only a dramatic Redbacks batting collapse on Monday will save the home side.

SA waited 30 overs before taking the new ball after tea as they tried to make the most of reverse swing.

The Bushrangers quickly lost three wickets once the new ball was taken, but managed to hold on for the rest of the day.

Jon Holland had belted 32 from 30 balls, with five fours and a six, while Scott Boland was on 13no.

The two tailenders had put on 43 for the ninth wicket.

Victoria trailed by 225 after their disastrous first innings and resumed on Sunday at 0-78.

Finch and Rob Quiney put on 99 before Quiney was the only batsman to fall before lunch, caught in slips off Gary Putland for 37.

The home side was well-set after lunch on 1-156, but lost 3-38.

Finch was the third of those dismissals, caught by Tom Cooper at first slip off Kane Richardson.

Cooper took the catch low and Finch stared at the umpire for several seconds before reluctantly leaving the field.

Finch faced 248 balls – the first time he has had a first-class innings with more than 200 deliveries.

The one-day and T20 national representative has been desperate to show better Shield form.

Maxwell greeted the new ball at 110 overs with two boundaries off Putland, but three balls later the left-armer bowled him.

Putland had taken 3-93 from 34 overs.
