Vics batsmen in big strife in Wagga

NSW’s spinners have ripped through the Victorian top-order to wrestle back the advantage in the crucial Sheffield Shield match at Robertson Oval in Wagga Wagga.

The Blues were bowled out on day one for just 206 – their lowest first-innings score of the season – however Nathan Lyon and Steve O’Keefe have shared the wickets as Victoria stumbled to 5-84 at lunch on day two on Monday, having started the day at 0-11.

Test off-spinner Lyon (3-37) had openers Rob Quiney and Chris Rogers caught close in, and when left-armer O’Keefe (2-31) dismissed Cameron White and Peter Handscomb the Vics were reduced to 4-34.

Lyon then dismissed skipper Matthew Wade and Victoria were 5-57 and facing the abyss.

However, No.3 Marcus Stoinis (39no) and Dan Christian (16no) carried their side to the break in a session that saw all bar two overs delivered by the spinners.

A win for either team at the first-ever Shield match to be held in Wagga Wagga would provide at least a temporary hold on top spot, with WA taking on South Australia in a match starting on Monday.
