Vics aim to return to top in cricket

Victoria are about to find out whether they really are emerging from the Sheffield Shield wilderness.

The Bushrangers are in second place, 1.26 points behind WA ahead of their top-of-the-table clash from Tuesday at the MCG.

After winning successive Shields in 2008-09 and 2009-10, Victoria steadily declined and last season finished last.

Opening batsman Chris Rogers has added incentive for Victoria to continue their resurgence, given this could be his last domestic season.

“Victoria have been pretty poor over the last couple of years (and) we’re determined to win something,” Rogers said.

“I want to be a part of that as well – maybe it is my last year in Australia playing.

“So to win a Shield would be fantastic … I will be doing everything I can to get runs this week against WA.”

Despite losing paceman Peter Siddle, who is being rested ahead of the Test series, Victoria have still managed to beef up their lineup for the WA match.

Glenn Maxwell, Scott Boland, Matthew Wade and Aaron Finch will join the 12-man squad.

The Bushrangers lost Marcus Stoinis with an ankle injury, while Jon Holland and David Hussey were left out.

Maxwell already has two Shield centuries this summer and Wade and Finch impressed during the one-day series win over South Africa.

WA regained Mitch Marsh from the Australian one-day team and further beefed up their attack by regaining impressive young paceman Jason Behrendorff.

Tom Beaton was dropped and Michael Hogan has an ankle injury.

“They’re almost my tip for the Shield, so hopefully there’s a bit of pressure on them,” Rogers said.

“They look like they have some tall, young fast bowlers who have big futures.”

Also this week, third-placed SA need to beat bottom side NSW at the SCG to keep pace with WA and Victoria.

Queensland will host Tasmania at Allan Border Field.
