Vic look forward from Tas Shield loss

Victoria will look to the return of their Australian reinforcements after batting let them down badly in the Sheffield Shield loss to Tasmania.

The Tigers claimed outright victory at Bellerive Oval on Tuesday after comfortably picking off a 200-run target for the loss of just two wickets.

After some handy starts the Bushrangers lost steady wickets in their first innings but completely fell apart in the second as they crumbled for 173 and set the home team a get-able total.

Victorian captain David Hussey admitted after the match the only thing they did right was win the toss.

“I thought Tassie outplayed us in every facet of the game,” he said.

But he’s now focused on Sunday’s Shield match against South Australia at Adelaide Oval.

“We get a few decent ins: Peter Siddle, Chris Rogers and Cameron White which is quite handy,” Hussey said.

“And you never know, we might get Jon Holland back as well so we might play two spinners.”

The Bushrangers were in Hobart without power hitter White, who scored an unbeaten 41 off 31 balls to help Australia to victory in Sunday’s T20 against South Africa.

And after returning from national duty against Pakistan, colour-blind Rogers didn’t cross Bass Strait for the day-night Shield, due to his difficulties in sighting the pink ball.

Tasmania performed with both bat and ball on Monday and Tuesday.

Resuming at 2-154 on the final day opener Jordan Silk (97 not out) steered the Tigers to victory with the help of Jonathan Wells (47 not out).

The pair chased down the necessary 46 runs in just as many minutes.

It was a good result for Tasmania after conceding a 26-run deficit.

“To really fight hard on days three and four when we were probably a little bit behind in the game, we are absolutely pumped to have turned it around in the last two days,” Silk said.

“(We’ve) notched up our first win of the (Shield season) and hopefully we can kick on from there.”

Tasmania play host to Western Australia on Sunday in a rematch of the first round in Perth which the Warriors won by seven wickets.

The Tigers will hope to be strengthened by the return of paceman Ben Hilfenhaus, who missed the first round due to national duties and was a late scratching from the match against Victoria after suffering a shoulder strain.

James Faulkner is also expected to be back for the Tigers after playing T20 for Australia.
