Turner to lead young CA XI vs India

Rising talent Ashton Turner will again lead a Cricket Australia XI in a two-day match against India in Adelaide, starting on Thursday.

A day after Phillip Hughes’ funeral in Macksville, 11 of Australia’s brightest cricket prospects will take the field at Glenelg Oval, including the 21-year-old Turner, young Victorian allrounder Alexander Keath and talented NSW keeper-batsman Ryan Carters.

“This is another great opportunity for some of our most exciting young cricketers to test themselves against one of the strongest international teams,” national talent manager Greg Chappell said in a statement.

Cricket Australia hastily organised the fixture to help the tourists prepare for the first Test, which now starts on Tuesday at Adelaide Oval, and praised the cooperation of the visiting team.

“We appreciate the understanding and cooperation shown by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), who has been nothing but supportive during this tragic time,” high performance manager Pat Howard said.

“They have put the welfare of the Australian national and domestic players, as well as the cricket community’s concerns for Phillip Hughes’ family, well ahead of their own preparation.

“We have a responsibility to provide international teams with adequate preparation ahead of international series and we feel that this two-day tour match will prove sufficient.”

India completed a two-day match at the same venue a week ago, when Hughes was felled by a bouncer at the SCG.

Regular captain MS Dhoni will not be ready for the tour game, however he could return for the opening chapter of the four-Test series.

CA XI squad: Ashton Turner (capt), Ryan Carters, Jake Doran, Sebastian Gotch, Evan Gulbis, Josh Lalor, Alexander Keath, David Moody, Jonte Pattison, Sam Rainbird, Matthew Short, Jordan Silk.
