Tough training key to Cup push: Maxwell

Australia could be forgiven for going through the motions at training after six weeks of the World Cup and a summer of cricket that started four months ago.

But Glenn Maxwell notes the opposite is true, with the tournament co-hosts making an effort to treat every net like it’s a match.

“We create our own match situation out there. The bowlers set their fields and they go at it, as if it’s a game,” Maxwell said.

“It makes it interesting in the nets, watching the opening bowlers bowl to the opening batsmen and trying to rip their heads off.

“It makes for good practice and if you can get through that, you can get through anything out in the middle.”

Australia and India will return to training on Monday, when they ramp up preparations for Thursday’s semi-final at the SCG.

National selectors are expected to name an unchanged XI for the clash, something they are yet to do in the tournament.

Recalled quick Josh Hazlewood was man of the match in Australia’s six-wicket win over Pakistan in the round of eight, so it’s hard to see how Pat Cummins or Xavier Doherty will bump him out of the XI.

Doherty’s only game in the tournament was at the SCG, where he recorded figures of 0-60 from seven overs against Sri Lanka.

“We’ve got 15 guys that are fit now and 15 guys that are world-class players basically,” Maxwell said.

“They’re all striving for spots in the team … trying to get into form.”

Shane Watson’s hopes of playing in the business end of the tournament looked dashed when he was dropped for a pool game against Afghanistan.

But the allrounder has hammered two half-centuries since being recalled, including an unbeaten 64 against Pakistan in the Adelaide Oval quarter-final.

“Watto played absolutely beautifully. It was incredible to see the way he weathered the storm from Wahab (Riaz),” Maxwell said.

“It just shows his experience.

“I remember saying at the start of the World Cup that he’s going to be an integral part of us winning this thing.

“If he’s playing well we’ve got a great chance of winning, so he’s hitting form at a beautiful time of the tournament.”
