Thunder won’t be BBL easybeats: Morgan

England international Eoin Morgan is adamant perennial Big Bash League easybeats the Sydney Thunder won’t roll over again this summer.

The Thunder have been the big disappointment throughout the infancy of the hugely successful Twenty20 tournament, finishing last in its first three seasons.

Considered the competition’s laughing stock for much of that time, the Thunder showed there could be better days ahead when they finally snapped a 19-game losing streak last season that had stretched over three years.

Morgan joins the Thunder for the second successive season under captain Mike Hussey and says fellow signings Jacques Kallis and Pat Cummins will be vital for the struggling franchise.

“To come back this year after what I had seen last year to see the ambition, the drive of everyone around, the coaching staff, the management team, the young guys coming through is huge,” Morgan, who has played who has played 16 Tests and 100 ODIs for England, told AAP.

“The signings we have made this year has made more of a significant impact upon me, guys like Jacques Kallis, Pat Cummins to name a few is outstanding.

“We put in some good performances last year, they weren’t good enough to get us over the line and that comes with getting out of the mould of getting used to losing all the time but I don’t think we are far away.

“The hard work we have put in, in the years before will hopefully come to fruition this year.

“I think we can break out of that rut this year.”

Hussey carried the side throughout much of last season, but Morgan said he wouldn’t have to do that again this summer.

“The other guys we have coming in, that takes pressure off guys like Mike Hussey who probably burdened himself with it a little last year,” Morgan said.

“We are looking to win the tournament like every other team.

“Given that it is T20, confidence and momentum is key so it is vital to start the tournament well and if we can start well I think we might shock a few teams.”
