Paceman Ben Hilfenhaus already has a sore shoulder, but he’s still been forced to do some of the heavy lifting for Tasmania’s underachieving batsmen.

In a dismal first innings effort the Tigers are 7-170 at stumps going in to Tuesday’s third day against Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield match at Bellerive Oval.

With the visitors all out for 301 just after lunch on Monday, the Warriors’ bowlers made quick work of the Tassie line up, leaving No.9 Hilfenhaus with his side’s top score: 32 not out.

Despite ongoing soreness in the field stemming from a shoulder sprain which ruled him out of playing in the last Shield round, Hilfenhaus is expected to step up by skipper Alex Doolan.

“He’s a bit sore … but really the only thing that’s restricting him is throwing at the moment,” the captain told reporters after play on Monday.

“We need to work hard now to get ourselves as close as we can to Western Australia, to leave ourselves as little work as possible coming into the last day,” Doolan said.

The Warriors launched a stinging attack with the ball on Monday, led by young paceman Simon Mackin.

The tall right-arm speedster, 22, boasted 3-34 from 14 overs including five maidens through the afternoon.

Tassie opener Jordan Silk (4) was dismissed lbw and Ed Cowan (25) was caught behind, both off Mackin deliveries.

It could have been 3-3 for the towering Warrior but for keeper Sam Whiteman’s misjudged catch that would have sent Doolan (18) back to the sheds.

Mackin struck again a short time later when a Jonathan Wells (6) pull shot was caught at mid on.

Doolan was the next to fall, caught at cover off a Michael Hogan (1-45) delivery.

And the misery continued for Tasmania.

“We are making life hard for ourselves in this game but we are certainly going to give it our all to get back in it,” Doolan said.

Speaking for the visitors, Hogan is pleased with his side’s standing at stumps.

“We have targets we set and obviously we’re achieving that and forcing the mistakes, that’s part of our plan,” he told reporters.

WA added 70 runs to their first day, bowled out shortly after lunch.

Andrew Fekete was the pick of the Tasmanian bowlers with 3-67.
