Tasmanian batsmen struggle in Hobart

Queensland skipper James Hopes has returned from injury to put a hole in Tasmania’s top order on day one of their Sheffield Shield clash at Bellerive Oval.

At lunch the home side are 4-73 with Hopes (2-3) making early inroads.

Tasmania’s usually reliable opener Ed Cowan was the first to go, caught at first slip for a duck.

Three overs later, Alex Doolan was also out for a duck when the Tigers skipper edged a delivery to be caught behind.

Hopes missed the Bulls’ last match as he took time out to recover from a rib complaint that became troubling during the recent Big Bash League.

He showed no sign of discomfort as he opened the attack in Hobart on Monday after winning the toss and choosing to bowl first.

Spinner Cameron Boyce (1-7) later found success in his first over, claiming the wicket of Beau Webster (21).

The local youngster had been called up from club cricket as Tasmania tries to find some batting stability.

Opener Jordan Silk (39) started to make progress for the hosts with a steady knock including five boundaries.

But he was out, bowled, just before the break off a Peter George (1-37) delivery.

Ben Dunk is five not out and Tim Paine eight not out.
