Tasmania destroy SA in Shield romp

Tasmania’s 313-run Sheffield Shield victory over South Australia is as much a healing step for cricket as it is a result for the island team, the winning coach says.

At Bellerive Oval on Friday the visitors were all out for 45 after facing a brutal bowling attack led by former Test paceman Ben Hilfenhaus.

And while Tigers coach Dan Marsh was full of praise for his players, he acknowledged that South Australia continue to battle since the death of teammate Phillip Hughes.

South Australia took to the field on Tuesday for the first time since Hughes was hit in the head by a bouncer during a Shield match at the SCG two weeks ago.

“It’s been a really tough couple of weeks for all involved with cricket so it was good to get out there and play for starters,” Marsh said.

“We don’t really know what (SA) is going through.

“I’m just glad cricket is being played – we were always going to have to start somewhere.

“I really do feel for those guys and I hope the healing process is going okay for them, the best it can be.”

On Friday Hilfenhaus proved a wrecking ball and finished with the superb figures of 5-11 off 14 overs.

His scalps included those of opener Sam Raphael (0), Tom Cooper (0), Travis Head (0) and Tim Ludeman (eight).

Andrew Fekete (3-9) also performed with the ball as he claimed the wickets of SA skipper Johan Botha (seven), Joe Mennie (one) and Trent Lawford (0) in successive overs.

Callum Ferguson top-scored for SA with 11.

Forty-five is SA’s fourth-lowest first-class innings total, say records that date back to the 1800s.

Tasmania resumed the fourth and final day at 4-176 and batted for 90 minutes before declaring at 8-298.

Opener Ed Cowan (158) who made back-to-back centuries across Tassie’s two innings, left the hosts well-placed for victory and admitted he’s hoping to catch the eye of national selectors.

South Australia’s players and management declined to comment to media throughout or following the match.
