Super sub strikes again at Gabba

The odd tradition of substitute fielders stealing the limelight has continued on day two of Australia’s second Test against India on Thursday.

But the training drill that helped super sub Marnus Labuschagne pull off his remarkable diving catch at short leg to dismiss Indian tailender Varun Aaron is truly bizarre.

Footage of the Queensland rookie’s one-handed effort off Nathan Lyon’s bowling will no doubt be on a TV highlights loop after he emerged as an unlikely hero.

However, the catching practice home video the South African-born Labuschagne posted on social media just two weeks ago is set to go viral following his Test heroics.

Roommate and fellow Bulls rookie James Bazley is seen cutting a cob of corn on a kitchen bench and in a split second a diving Labuschagne intercepts it one-handed before it hits the ground.

It is eerily similar to his wonderful effort at short leg that helped Australia dismiss India for 408 on Thursday as the visitors lost 6-97 in day two’s morning session.

And it added another chapter to super-sub history.

Last summer, Queensland’s Chris Sabburg held a superb catch in the deep to dismiss England dangerman Kevin Pietersen.

Fellow Bulls players Ryan Broad and Peter Cantrell have also pulled off Gabba Test catches as replacements.

Legend has it Cantrell was out nightclubbing late before receiving a last-minute call-up to field in the 1990 Ashes Test.

It didn’t stop him taking two catches, including a blinder to dismiss Alec Stewart.

But sometimes Australia are on the wrong end of an inspired substitute.

Gary Pratt famously ran out Ricky Ponting in the 2005 Trent Bridge Ashes Test.

Labuschagne – from Klerksdorp, birthplace of Desmond Tutu – can catch but is trying to make a name for himself as an opener after making his Sheffield Shield debut for Queensland this season.
