Steketee stars for Queensland on debut

Young Queenslander Mark Steketee looks to have secured himself a permanent spot in the state’s Sheffield Shield side after a shining debut performance against Tasmania.

The 21-year-old right-arm fast bowler from Warwick in southeast Queensland played an instrumental role in the Bulls’ innings-and-50-run thrashing of the Tigers at Bellerive Oval, which finished two days early on Tuesday.

He took 3-56 during Tasmania’s first innings on Monday and backed up a day later with figures of 4-33.

In between, he also performed with the bat, coming in at No.10 to add a handy 34 runs – including a six and four boundaries – to Queensland’s 320 total.

“It’s an admirable effort for a cricketer making his first-class debut,” skipper James Hopes agreed.

“We’ve been waiting for our time to bring him in,” Hopes said of Steketee’s inclusion in the XI.

“He can bowl a fair bit quicker than he’s bowling in these games, but he’s trying to worry about his lengths and his lines.

“As he gets more confident at the level, he’ll start to show the speed that we know he’s got and he’s going to be a very handy addition for the rest of this year and going forward.”

Steketee has played for the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League for the past two seasons, where his best bowling figures were 2-20.

But he’s not the only newcomer proving valuable for the Maroons.

After making an impressive debut last round, paceman Simon Milenko again shone, taking 5-15 to be the pick of Queensland’s bowlers on Tuesday.

Both men will likely travel next week to Alice Springs, where Queensland take on Victoria in a rematch of last round when the Bulls emerged victors by an innings and 13 runs.

Since the installation of interim coach Justin Sternes, Queensland have notched up two successive convincing victories.

Hopes said the key has been in the planning.

“We’re making sure we tick every box… we’re being a bit pedantic about it… and the guys go out there and know what we’re trying to do,” he said.

“The last two games we’ve done that and it’s worked so I can’t see any reason to change going forward.”
