Steady start for QLD after Tas collapse

Queensland are 0-14 at tea in reply to Tasmania’s disastrous collapse for 149 on day one of their Sheffield Shield clash at Bellerive Oval.

The visitors have started their innings cautiously on the lively Hobart pitch which proved so valuable to their powerful bowling attack.

Tasmania couldn’t last 48 overs against the Bulls’ bowling, which was led by James Hopes (4-24).

In his first match back after an injury spell the Bulls skipper was the pick of the bowlers and claimed among his scalps the crucial early wickets of opener Ed Cowan (0) and Alex Doolan (0).

Making his first-class debut, Mark Steketee (3-56) earned his pay cheque, while spinner Cameron Boyce finished with 2-7.

Ben Dunk’s gallant 71 that included four sixes and four boundaries was the only innings of substance for the home side.

But it wasn’t enough to save the Tigers, whose top order has again let down the side.

Selectors had promoted allrounder Beau Webster (21) from club cricket into the Tasmanian side for this match in an attempt to shore up the state’s batting performance.

For the home side Charlie Hemphrey remains not out with two and Joe Burns has nine.
