Starc ‘inspired’ by Warne criticism

Mitchell Starc’s Australian teammate Chris Rogers says the tall left-armer has been inspired by Shane Warne’s strident criticism, as he eyes a return to the Test arena at the SCG next week.

Warne attacked Starc for his “soft” body language in the second Test at the Gabba as Australia struggled for Indian wickets in stifling Brisbane heat on the opening day.

The 24-year-old hit back, claiming Warne had been critical of him for years, and saying he hadn’t lost sleep over the leg-spinning great’s comments.

Starc is set to return to the Australian side for the final Test of the summer starting at the SCG on Tuesday, following Mitchell Johnson’s withdrawal with a hamstring injury.

Since battling at the ‘Gabba with 0-83 and 2-27, Starc has excelled in the Big Bash, with Warne taking credit for firing him up.

Teammate Rogers says Starc is ready to make an impact.

“He’s a pretty quiet bloke, tends to keep to himself a little bit.

“But I think those comments will sting him a little bit.

“Also I think they’d inspire him and if Warney is saying that, you’re forced to listen.

“It’s all about how he responds so hopefully if he gets that opportunity he makes the most of it.”
