Spinner Doherty gets Aussie ODI call-up

Spinner Xavier Doherty has been called into the Australian one-day squad ahead of Wednesday’s third one-day international (ODI) against South Africa.

A late scratching from Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield line-up on Sunday, the 31-year old later confirmed to media he would be part of the Australian squad for the ODI at Manuka Oval.

While not yet guaranteed to play, Doherty said spin would probably suit the Canberra wicket.

“Given it’s more of a spinners’ wicket, I think I’ll be some sort of chance and given that it’s an all-pace attack at the moment,” he said.

After speaking with Rod Marsh in recent weeks, Doherty believed spinners would come into the Australian approach later in the series.

“And here’s my chance.

“I’ve got an opportunity to really nail my spot for the rest of this series and then, after that, who knows?”

Doherty spent a lot of time in the off-season tweaking his technique and becoming “more attacking” and said the efforts were showing.

“The rewards are starting to pay off,” he said.

“I feel like I’ve been bowling well over the past couple of months.”
