Spidercam blamed for spilt Aust catch

Steve Smith has blown his stack at the Nine Network’s Spidercam at the SCG, blaming the high tech floating camera after spilling crucial catch for Australia in the fourth Test.

As Smith chased a KL Rahul top edge off Shane Watson the ‘eye in the sky’ suspended broadcasting device hovered him, before the skipper grassed the difficult chance.

As he lay sprawled on the turf Smith gesticulated toward the Spidercam above him and could be seen clearly mouthing the words “f***ing wire”.

Channel Nine commentator Ian Healy’s immediate reaction was to say:”I think it’s hit the wire”.

After several replays of the incident, that couldn’t be confirmed, with Healy saying: “It might not have hit the wire it might have just distracted him.”

Shortly after the incident Cricket Australia and the Nine Network released a joint statement denying the ball had hit the broadcaster’s device, but acknowledging it distracted him.

“We (CA & Nine) have spoken about the matter involving Spidercam and the dropped catch before lunch and it’s clear the ball did not hit the camera or its supporting wires,” the statement said.

“Captain Steve Smith was distracted by one of the wires in his eye line.

“Both CA and Nine will continue to work together on the use of Spidercam in the broadcast coverage and will take on board any player feedback as necessary.

“As it stands, if any player has a concern about the placement of Spidercam they can ask the umpires for it to be moved.

“Spidercam technology has been used in Nine’s international cricket coverage for many years and is used in other major sporting events such as the SuperBowl, NRL and AFL Grand Finals.”

In replays Smith could be seen struggling to sight the ball, as he readied himself to catch the ball.

The Spidercam incident was one of a number of close shaves for Rahul who notched up his maiden Test half-century shortly before lunch.
