Smith scores ton in first Test as captain

Steve Smith has posted a century in his first Test as captain of Australia.

Smith reached triple figures in the 73rd over, cutting a wide ball from Varun Aaron to the fence.

He jumped in delight, kissed his helmet and pointed to the sky with his bat.

The 25-year-old is leading Australia in the absence of hamstrung skipper Michael Clarke.

It is the highest score for an Australian debut captain since Greg Chappell’s 123 at the Gabba 39 years ago.

Smith is the 28th player and the ninth Australian in the history of cricket to score a century in their first Test as captain.
