SA’s Ferguson plays it cool on Test claims

After cracking another century, Callum Ferguson knows he’s in the form of his life – he just hopes Australian selectors realise it too.

Ferguson’s unbeaten 137 and Tim Ludeman’s 98 not out underpinned South Australia’s 4-304 against Victoria on Sunday’s opening day of the Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.

With much uncertainty surrounding Australia’s team for the first Test against India starting December 4, Ferguson’s ton is most timely.

But he’s not getting carried away just yet with the prospect of earning a coveted baggy green cap.

“I don’t think there’s a cricketer in Australia that is not ready for a baggy green, it has certainly always been an aim,” Ferguson said.

“There are certainly some other guys that will be pushing for that spot as well.

“I really haven’t put too much thought into that, to be honest.

“I know that I wasn’t in any of the recent squads so I’m probably coming from a fair way back.”

Ferguson demanded coach Darren Berry bat him at the pivotal number three slot this season, knowing it could help SA and further his Test claims. The coach agreed.

And Ferguson has responded in style – he’s the Shield’s leading scorer with 317 runs at the imposing average of 158.50.

“I’m batting well,” he said.

“I have done a lot of hard work over the last few years to really tighten up my four-day game. And I feel like I’m defending really well, which certainly helps the rest of your game.”

Ferguson, who topped SA’s Shield averages last summer, glued the Redbacks together early on Sunday after fellow Test hopeful Phil Hughes failed.

Hughes made just seven, falling to Australian paceman Peter Siddle, who produced tidy figures of 1-34 from 17 overs.

Ferguson rescued the Redbacks from a precarious 3-44, finding support from wicketkeeper batsman Tim Ludeman, who was on the verge of his second first-class century.

The pair have put on an unbroken 197 runs to blunt Victoria’s bowlers after Siddle and spinner Jon Holland (2-86 from 21 overs) made early inroads.
