Sarfraz Ahmed smashes century v Aust

Sarfraz Ahmed’s 80-ball hundred has helped Pakistan push on to a massive first-innings tally of 8-454 at tea on day two of the first Test against Australia.

Michael Clarke’s side face a huge task to remain competitive in the match on a pitch which offers little for the quicks but is starting to take turn out of the bowlers’ footmarks.

Sarfraz, who was out in the last over before tea for 109, scored his second hundred in successive Tests.

He struck 14 fours off 105 deliveries.

The 27-year-old wicketkeeper/batsman edged a boundary over slips for his hundred and ran through to the non-striker’s end and halfway to the dressing room, waving his bat in celebration before kneeling face down on the ground.

Left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar suffered a nasty finger injury on his right hand but is unbeaten on seven at tea.

Sarfraz joins Younis Khan (106) as century-makers in Pakistan’s first innings, while Asad Shafiq made 89.

Shafiq was dropped on nine at short leg by Alex Doolan off the bowling of spinner Nathan Lyon (1-148) in the second over of the day on Thursday.

Pakistan had resumed on their overnight score of 4-219 and went to lunch on Thursday on 5-328, losing the wicket of Misbah-ul-Haq for 69.

The 40-year-old holed out to long-on from the bowling of part-time leggie Steve Smith at 5-291.

Shafiq fell after lunch, miscuing a sweep to mid-wicket where Mitchell Marsh completed the catch off the bowling of his fellow debutant Steve O’Keefe (2-107).

Sarfraz and Shafiq shared a 124-run partnership for the sixth wicket, scoring at almost six runs per over.

O’Keefe also removed Yasir Shah caught at point at 7-442 and Lyon broke through in his 37th over when Sarfraz was stumped by Brad Haddin.
