SA 4-168 against Queensland at tea

South Australian batsman Callum Ferguson posted an unbeaten half-century against Queensland on the opening day of the Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.

The Redbacks were 4-168 at tea, with Ferguson not out 65 and Dan Christian on 10.

Bulls captain James Hopes claimed 2-31, including the wicket of Phil Hughes for eight.

Hughes shuffled back and across his crease to a Hopes delivery and was struck on his pads, the ball appearing to be on a path above stump-high.

But the left-hander was given out and denied a chance to impress national selectors ahead of the three-Test series against South Africa starting November 9.

Hopes soon after had Sam Miller caught behind for eight, leaving SA wobbling at 2-29 after winning the toss and batting.

But Michael Klinger and Ferguson put on 64 runs for the third wicket to steady the home side.

The partnership ended when Klinger, on 48, attempted to cut a short Ben Cutting delivery only to chop the ball into his stumps.

Nineteen-year-old Travis Head then combined with Ferguson for a 57 run partnership, broken when the left-hander was caught at short cover for 22 from the offspin of Nathan Hauritz (1-62).
