Renegades appoint Saker as head coach

England bowling guru David Saker has been announced as the new head coach of the Melbourne Renegades.

A former Victorian fast bowler, Saker has been on the coaching staff of England’s cricket team for the past five years and was lauded for his role in Ashes victories over Australia – most recently in 2013.

In a statement the Renegades said the 48-year-old would link with Melbourne as soon as he finalises his plans with England, who he is contracted to until the end of the Ashes, which wrap up in August.

Saker is understood to be willing to make the move earlier, if granted an early release by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

“I’m very excited to join the club and come back to Melbourne, which is home, and work with everyone involved,” Saker, who played 72 first class matches for Victoria and Tasmania, said of his two-year deal to replace Simon Helmot.

“The Renegades have put together a solid squad so far and with the recent addition of Cameron White and other new signings to be confirmed, we’ll be looking for big things from the guys (next season).”
