Ball dominated bat on the opening day of the Sheffield Shield match between Queensland and South Australia, with 13 wickets falling at the Gabba.

After being sent in to bat, South Australia made 230 before the Bulls were reduced to 3/59 at stumps, trailing by 171 runs.

Redbacks debutant Nick Benton had a day to remember, hitting 33 not out and taking 2/20 with the ball.

Batting at number eleven, Benton combined with Adam Zampa (67) for a 58-run last wicket stand.

The aggressive pair united at the crease at 9/172 before putting on 58 off 110 balls – the highest partnership of the South Australian innings.

Zampa was eventually dismissed after posting his third first class half-century, caught by Cameron Boyce at third slip off the bowling of James Hopes.

Earlier, Queensland clinically disposed of the South Australian top order with new ball duo Hopes (4/38) and Peter George (3/47) doing the damage.

“I was pretty happy with how I bowled early on,” George said.

“They put on a good partnership at the end, by then the shine had gone off the ball and the pitch had flattened out a bit.

“Benton is no bunny for a number eleven and Zampa is in good form… but I think if you’d have offered us that total at the beginning of the day we would have taken it.”

Big names Mark Cosgrove (9) and Callum Ferguson (2) both fell to Hopes in his opening seven over spell which conceded just two runs.

The visitors grafted to 4/76 at lunch, which swiftly became 7/110 when Hopes had Tim Ludeman caught by Peter Forrest in the second session.

Forrest claimed a total of five catches on a fruitful day at second slip.

Charlie Hemphrey (17) and Peter Forrest (2) will resume for Queensland tomorrow.
