Queensland on top in Shield clash at Gabba

Queensland are on top at lunch on the opening day of the Sheffield Shield match at the Gabba, reducing South Australia to 4-76 at the Gabba.

After being sent in to bat on green-tinged wicket, the Redbacks lost two early wickets before the Bulls struck another double-blow close to the break.

Bulls skipper James Hopes led the way with the ball, striking twice inside the opening ten overs on Friday in a final-round match that has no bearing on the final.

Hopes removed Mark Cosgrove (9) and Callum Ferguson (2) cheaply to leave South Australia in early trouble at 2-15.

An aggressive Cosgrove hit former teammate Peter George for two boundaries down the ground but was quickly undone by Hopes.

The opener was dismissed caught behind by Chris Hartley prodding at a delivery in the fifth over.

Hopes then removed Ferguson in the ninth over with a textbook outswinger and sharp catch by Peter Forrest at first slip.

Youngsters Kelvin Smith and Tom Cooper were left to rebuild the innings and crawled to 2-28 after the first hour at a run-rate of two per over.

The duo opened up slightly after drinks, taking to rookie Jack Wildermuth and pushing the Redbacks’ total past fifty.

However, the second-gamer had the last laugh, with Forrest again taking a comfortable catch to remove Cooper for 23.

Opener Kelvin Smith (27 off 74 balls) was removed on the stroke of lunch by George with Forrest snaffling his third catch of the session.

Travis Head (8 not out) and Jake Lehmann (2no) will resume after lunch.

Both sides are fielding a debutant – teenage batsmen Matthew Renshaw becomes the 10th debutant for Queensland this season, while seam bowler Nick Benton earns his first cap for South Australia.

At 18, Renshaw, a member of the Australian U18 squad, is the youngest first-class debutant for the Bulls since Alister McDermott in 2009.

Benton, Jake Lehmann and Trent Lawford replace Kane Richardson, Alex Ross and Daniel Worrall from the South Australian side that beat Tasmania last month.
