Qld take 147-run lead over WA in Shield

Western Australia have limited the damage on day three but Luke Pomersbach’s century ensured Queensland took a solid first-innings lead in the Sheffield Shield clash at the WACA Ground.

Resuming at 3-255 on Sunday, Queensland were dismissed for 401 in the second session in reply to WA’s 254 to give the visitors a 147-run advantage.

Former WA batsman Luke Pomersbach made a superb 159 while Usman Khawaja (64) and captain James Hopes (50) were the other main contributors for the Bulls.

Pomersbach, playing his first Shield game of the season and as a late call-up for the game when Greg Moller was forced to withdraw through injury, the 29-year-old sure grabbed his chance.

Late on day two, the hard-hitting left-hander brought up his fourth Shield century, and first for Queensland, and remained 137no overnight.

He took his score to 159 on Sunday morning before the second new ball did the trick for WA and he was caught at slip by Adam Voges off the bowling of Michael Hogan.

That brought an end to a terrific knock from Pomersbach that lasted 281 deliveries and included 21 boundaries and two sixes, including one off Ashton Agar over long-on to bring up his century on Saturday.

Queensland lost nightwatchman Nathan Hauritz for eight early on day three and then Pomersbach fell not long after as the Bulls were 5-306.

Peter Forrest made 21 before being clean bowled by Hogan and then just before lunch, Chris Hartley was caught at slip by Voges off Jason Behrendorff for six.

Hogan was the pick of the WA bowlers taking 3-69 with Jason Behrendorff also solid with 2-77.

Nathan Coulter-Nile (2-95) struggled for the most part but claimed two late wickets as did Agar (1-104).
