Qld in thrilling Shield win over SA

A century to opener Joe Burns has guided Queensland to a dramatic five-wicket win over South Australia late on day four of their Sheffield Shield match.

Burns, who made his Test debut for Australia this summer, brought up his eighth first class hundred to steer Queensland to a last-gasp victory.

It went right down to the wire, with all-rounder Jack Wildermuth (32 not out) hitting a massive six to win the match with just 20 balls to spare.

Burns finished unbeaten on 135 and paid tribute to his side’s composure.

“There was some great hitting at the end there to get us over the line, it was a great four day game,” he said.

“It’s a good way to sign off on the year and go into the off season on a positive note.”

The result consigned South Australia to their fifth Sheffield Shield wooden spoon in six seasons.

Chasing 299 off 67 overs for victory, the Bulls lost three early wickets but recovered with Burns and Peter Forrest (81) sharing a 162-run stand.

Burns then partnered Chris Hartley (33) and Wildermuth to get the Bulls home.

Earlier, Queensland bowled the visitors out for 458 just before lunch on day four to set up a thrilling finish.

The Redbacks lost 6-101 in the morning session, with Ben Cutting taking season-best figures of 5-88.

The home side were reduced to 3-30 early but steadied to 3-95 at tea before Burns took control.

After being sent into bat, South Australia were bowled out for 230 on the first day with James Hopes taking 4-38.

Hopes’ five wickets for the match brought his season tally to 30, finishing as Queensland’s highest wicket taker and fourth in the competition.

A maiden century by Charlie Hemphrey (118) dug Queensland out of a precarious position to a 160-run first innings lead but tons to Mark Cosgrove and Callum Ferguson gave South Australia the ascendancy on day three.
