Mark Steketee took four wickets on debut as defending champions Queensland thrashed Victoria by nine wickets in their opening Matador Cup game at the Gabba.

Chris Hartley (46 not out) and Usman Khawaja (38) easily chased down the meagre target of 112 with 38.4 overs to spare, earning the Bulls two bonus points.

The game was effectively won by the opening spell from Steketee (4-29) and fellow quick Luke Feldman (2-25) who took two early wickets apiece to reduce the Bushrangers to 4-39.

After taking the wickets of Rob Quiney (3) and Cameron White (6), man of the match Steketee returned to dismiss Chris Tremain (11) and top-scorer Peter Handscomb (20).

The 20-year-old quick said his performance was reward for hard work over the winter as part of the National Performance Squad, where he gained valuable experience in a four-team tournament in July and August in Darwin, facing Australia A, India A and South Africa A.

“I worked really hard with (bowling coach) Troy Cooley and Andrew Weller, the strength and conditioning coach,” Steketee said.

“I wasn’t really happy with how it was coming along in Darwin, but it’s good now to be putting performances on the board.”

With the likes of Alister McDermott, Peter George and Cameron Gannon on the sidelines, Steketee is looking no further than another good display, if selected, against New South Wales on Monday.

“As a squad that’s why we’re so good, we’ve got a lot of depth. I had to work to have the opportunity to be here today.

“Just putting good consistent cricket together now will be the main goal going forward.”

Ben Cutting, looking to impress the Australian selectors, had to wait until the 19th over to get his hand on the ball but soon took the key wicket of David Hussey (18).

The bowling allrounder, who played for Australia in Twenty20 and 50-over formats on the tour of Zimbabwe, finished with figures of 3-13 off eight overs.

While Queensland will be confident of becoming the first side to win three consecutive domestic one-day cups since New South Wales in 2003, Victoria will be looking to forget this performance when they next take the field against South Australia on Monday.

Even the lone wicket of Khawaja was a stumping off a wide from Jon Holland, thanks to sharp work from skipper Matthew Wade that was unbefitting of such an awful team performance.
