Poms not gloating over thrashings: Gooch

England batting coach Graham Gooch said there has been no gloating in the home dressing room after their one-day series win over the old enemy but admitted “it’s always satisfying to beat Australia”.

England are seeking a 4-0 thumping in the final one-day match in Manchester on Tuesday after sealing the series with a comfortable eight-wicket win in Durham at the weekend. It’s a far cry from the 6-1 thrashings that England suffered in two of their last three one-day series against Australia, though England did win the last two Ashes series.

Gooch, who played 42 of his 118 Tests against Australia, appreciates the special rivalry between the teams more than most after his own playing career.

“It’s always satisfying to beat Australia, I can’t deny that, I can’t lie about that,” Gooch said.

“And I’m sure they feel equally satisfied when they beat England.

“Some people playing now and some people not playing now have been on the end of a few hidings from Australia.

“But I don’t think anyone in our dressing room is gloating, they’re just proud of what they have achieved in terms of the consistency of the performance.”

Gooch insisted there will be no complacency from England towards the Old Trafford day-night match even though the series is already won. That attitude, he said, comes as much from the fact England would never let up whenever the opposition is Australia – a rivalry that sparks the sternest of competitive spirit.

“Everyone wants to perform against the Australians and I’m sure they want to perform against England because it’s a special contest,” Gooch said.

“It is one that has got tradition and history, whether it is a Test or an ODI it doesn’t really matter, as you’re playing against Australia.

“That is what counts in the players’ eyes and you certainly want to get one over on them and our guys can be rightly proud of the way they have performed so far.

“I don’t think they are going to let up in this last game, they want to win because any match against Australia is a contest in itself and one to respected. The series is won but there is another one-off contest coming up on Tuesday.”

Gooch said he didn’t think England would take much from the series looking ahead to next year’s Ashes, but admitted more wins over Australia would nonetheless boost confidence.
