Kevin Pietersen will make a long-awaited appearance in this season’s Big Bash League, playing for Melbourne Stars.

The 34-year-old English batsman, regarded as one of the finest stroke-makers in world cricket, is the highest-profile signing for the new BBL season.

Pietersen, cast aside by England after they slumped to a 5-0 Ashes loss in 2013-14, said he was excited about joining the Stars.

“(It) was an easy choice for me when you look at the players we have … and don’t forget our home ground, the MCG,” he said.

The Stars pride themselves on luring high-profile cricketers to their team, with Shane Warne, Lasith Malinga, and a host of Australian T20 internationals having played for the side.

New chairman of selectors Damien Fleming said the Stars were hopeful Pietersen’s arrival would help them finally win the league.

“Someone of his experience will be of great benefit to our club as we strive to go one step further in BBL 04,” Fleming said.

“KP’s an awesome talent and proven world-class cricketer across all forms of the game.”

Despite his reputation as a divisive force in the change-room, captain Cameron White said his good friend Pietersen was a great signing.

“He’s a tremendous addition to the squad and will fit in really well, and he’ll hopefully provide us the edge to go deeper into the tournament this year.”

Melbourne Stars were beaten semi-finalists in the first three competitions.
