Pietersen still has Test cricket hopes

English cricket star Kevin Pietersen holds out hope he might resume his Test career.

The 34-year-old says he wants to see what happens over the next six months.

Pietersen was removed from the Test team in February after their disastrous 5-0 Ashes whitewash during the last Australian summer.

“I’m not so sure – it’s very interesting,” he said.

“I know there are a lot of changes that are going to be happening in England in the next three or four months, so who knows?

“I know I still have four or five years left.

“Whether I just want to play T20 though, is another thing.

“The next six months, with the changes happening in England, (it) could be interesting.”

Pietersen also made it clear he would love to be back in the Test side.

“I have 8300 runs – I’d love to get 10,000 Test runs,” he said.

“I’d love to beat Australia again … last time, we got hammered.

“That doesn’t sit well – I’m not a player who likes being hammered, I’m a player who plays to win.”

Pietersen has come to Melbourne to play for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.

He said one benefit from the enforced Test layoff had been his troublesome knee was feeling much better.

Pietersen said the break had been “amazing”.

“I should have had a microfracture before the double Ashes last year,” he said.

“But I was flying around this country getting injected by every single doctor to try to get myself through.

“Having not played Test cricket since January, my body has felt a hell of a lot better.

“I’m feeling good – ready to go.”

Pietersen also praised the Australian media for how it had treated the Phillip Hughes tragedy.

He was in England when Hughes died.

“It got a huge reaction – it touched everybody,” he said.

“You shouldn’t die playing sport.

“It was as sad a morning as I can remember.”
