Pakistan set Aust target of 216 in ODI

Pakistan failed to capitalise on a grand start, losing ten wickets for 89 runs to set Australia a target of 216 to win Friday’s second one-day cricket clash in Dubai.

Left-arm quick Mitchell Johnson claimed his second consecutive three-wicket haul in another dominant performance.

Ahmed Shehzad (61) and Sarfraz Ahmed (65) shared a 126-run partnership off 25.1 overs to give the home side a strong platform.

The wheels fells off for Pakistan though and their innings ended on 215 in the 50th over with the third run out of the game.

Shehzad had two let-offs in two successive overs from the Australians, who also missed several run-out opportunities during the first-wicket stand.

Australia captain George Bailey dropped a simple chance at mid-off with Shehzad on 51 in the 22nd over, bowled by Kane Richardson.

Shehzad was given out lbw to spinner Nathan Lyon for 52 but the batsman called for a review which showed the ball struck the pad outside off stump.

Shehzad’s luck ran out when pulled a long hop from spinner Xavier Doherty to mid-wicket in the 26th over.

Sarfraz departed in the following over, caught at gully off Johnson’s bowling.

Pakistan’s running had a constant air of danger and skipper Misbal-ul-Haq (15) fell victim to a neat pice of fielding from Glenn Maxwell at 3-159.

Johnson also removed Umar Akmal caught at mid-off and the pace bowler held a catch at mid-off to dismiss Asad Shafiq (29).

Pakistan’s middle order dramas continued with the score on 199 when Shahid “Boom Boom” Afridi played a typically wild slog and was out for two. The big hitter fell to a juggling catch at first slip by Steve Smith as Johnson made a third key breakthrough.

Wahab Riaz, Raza Hasan and Zulfiqar Babar offered little resistance and No.11 Mohammad Irfan’s run out was a good illustration of the confusion within the Pakistan camp.

However while Pakistan would have hoped for a bigger total, 216 still gives the host team a chance on a pitch where chasing runs may prove difficult.

Pakistan had won the toss.
