No complaints from Finch over schedule

It’d be easy for Australia to find a few things to complain about during the Cricket World Cup.

Whether it be playing one match in 13 days, or their current stretch of three games in eight days.

Aaron Finch prefers to see the upside of both, as his side prepare to face Sri Lanka on Sunday at the SCG.

“It’s been difficult. Anytime you’re changing time zones as dramatic as Auckland to Perth, it’s quite tough,” Finch said on Friday in Sydney.

“But we did everything possible to counteract that. There’s really no excuse for the boys not to be fresh for the game.

“It’s a World Cup. You embrace everything about it, you don’t complain and you just get on with it.”

Australia were beaten by New Zealand last Saturday in Auckland, then flew to Perth where they downed Afghanistan on Wednesday with ease.

The schedule was in sharp contrast to the start of the tournament, when a win over England was followed by a week’s break and a washout in Brisbane.

Finch, who scored 135 at the MCG in the tournament opener, had every right to feel a little antsy.

“When you’re in good form, to play consistently is valuable,” the hard-hitting opener said.

“A lot of the time, when you play then have a long break, you spend so much of it training and almost forget how it felt in the middle.

“But when you have that time, any changes you need to make to your game – you’ve got plenty of time to do it.”

Finch added the entire squad had benefited from the extended break.

“That’s one of the real positives to come out of it,” he said.

“Although we lost a lot of momentum going into that New Zealand game … it wasn’t a bad thing.

“We’ll be ok.”

Australia had an optional training session on Friday, with the batsmen having a low-key hit in the nets.

Pat Cummins, who missed the clash with Afghanistan due to injury, and his fellow pacemen did not bowl.

Finch was diplomatic when asked about Shane Watson being dropped from the XI.

“When you’ve got players like (George) Bailey, Watson, Cummins, (Xavier) Doherty on the sidelines, that’s a really strong position to be in,” he said.

“We’ve got so much flexibility with our team, I don’t think it matters which way you go.”
