NSW wicketkeeper Peter Nevill admits he was surprised to be named in the Australian Test squad for the tours of the West Indies and the United Kingdom later this year.

Nevill beat out competition from close friend, Victorian Matthew Wade, to be named Brad Haddin’s deputy and said he will do everything he can to ensure he is the long-term successor to the veteran gloveman.

“It’s hard to predict what’s going to happen in the future,” Nevill said.

“All I am focused on is going over with the team to do my best and to prepare as if I am going to play.

“Then if my time comes I have to make sure I take my chance.”
