Morgan to bring out the goods for PM XI

Chris Rogers expects good mate Eoin Morgan to be a raging success as England’s new limited-overs cricket captain after the controversial decision to dump Alastair Cook.

The former Middlesex teammates go head-to-head as skippers in the PM’s XI clash against England at Manuka Oval on Wednesday.

Rogers is confident Morgan will be in good form as the tourists take on a young Australian squad.

“He’s a very positive character and relaxed, but he’ll try and lead from the front,” the Australian Test opener told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

“I have a lot of respect for him and he’s going to do a very good job.”

The match will be England’s final warm-up match ahead of the tri series opener against Australia at the SCG on Friday.

“It’s going to be fun – but obviously a lot of my Test career has been against England and it’s been pretty competitive,” said Rogers.

“It could be a very good game, we have a lot of talent on our side who are eager to do well so it will be nice to get one up on England.”

Rogers said he was looking forward to playing against old English teammates and alongside others who he’s had limited time with, including Cameron Bancroft, Jake Doran, Jason Behrendorff, Pat Cummins and Peter Handscomb.

The 37-year-old was a last-minute replacement as captain for an injured Mike Hussey, who damaged his calf playing for the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League on Friday.

Rogers said he was honoured to have been called to the job by the prime minister, even if his last encounter with Tony Abbott didn’t exactly go according to plan.

“I turned up late to the Opera House when he spoke last year, so maybe I have a few things to make up for,” he said.

“I’m just going to enjoy it, I won’t have to take it as seriously as the last four weeks and enjoy being around the other guys.”

“It’s Australia versus England … it’s one of those events where there’s a lot of pride to play for this side.”
