Maxwell, Warner get tons against India

Explosive Australian batsmen Glenn Maxwell and David Warner blasted rapid-fire centuries against India in Sunday’s World Cup warm-up game in Adelaide.

The Australians were all out for 371 from 48.2 overs with Maxwell retiring on 122 and Warner 104.

Maxwell reached his ton from just 53 balls while Warner took only 80 deliveries for his milestone.

Maxwell smashed eight sixes and 11 fours in a dynamite 57-ball knock which he ended with three consecutive sixes from Umesh Yadav’s bowling before retiring.

The enigmatic right-hander scored 34 runs from his initial 28 deliveries and then cracked 88 runs from his next 29 balls faced.

Maxwell capitalised on early momentum offered by Warner while George Bailey (44 from 66 balls), Shane Watson (22 from 17 deliveries), Mitchell Marsh (21 from 26 balls) and Aaron Finch (20 from 20 balls) all contributed.

India deployed eight bowlers and all copped stick – Mohammed Shami took 3-83 from 9.2 overs while Umesh Yadav claimed 2-52.

Warner set the tone early – he crunched the first ball of the innings for four and registered a half-century from 41 balls before cantering to his ton.

Warner, mindful of the desire to give teammates time at the crease, then seemingly engineered his own demise by missing a straight ball from slow bowler Axar Patel in the over after scoring his ton.

His dismissal brought Maxwell to the crease and the Victorian displayed a vast array of shot-making in his spectacular innings.

Maxwell produced some brutal power hitting but also some fine craft, including a precocious reverse ramp shot for four to move closer to a century.

The only recognised Australian batsman who failed to make much impact was Steve Smith, who was bowled around his legs for one in a rare failure in his breakout summer.
