Lyon to be fit for ODI final

Australia’s only front line spinner on tour Nathan Lyon is expected to fully recover from a leg problem in time for Saturday’s tri-series final against South Africa.

Lyon finished Tuesday’s convincing 62-run win over the Proteas off the field, receiving treatment, after hobbling through his 10 overs in the second innings with a complaint in his thigh.

Coach Darren Lehmann had said selectors would only consider flying in a squad replacement for Michael Clarke if another player was to break down.

However, all indications are that an emergency replacement won’t be necessary, with Lyon virtually a certain starter for the final.

“I don’t think it will be an issue. I think he’s pretty confident the doctor and physio will settle that down in the next couple of days,” captain George Bailey said.

“We’ve got three days off so that’s a pretty good break.”

Bailey said the problem was one that flared up occasionally, but settled down quickly.

Lyon briefly left the field midway through his bowling for treatment and when he returned he continued to drag his leg behind him.

As soon as he’d finished with figures of 1-53, Lyon left the ground.

Given the slow, turning conditions at the Harare Sports Club, Australia can ill-afford to lose their spinner for a final.

When Lyon was dropped from Australia’s first round-robin fixture against the Proteas, the side suffered a seven-wicket loss.

Bailey believes the thatchy grass in Harare has contributed to players from both teams pulling up with cramps and tightness.
