Lehmann wants ‘squad mentality’ at Cup

For Darren Lehmann it’s not so much a case of first XI, but first XIs.

Australia’s coach will adopt “a squad mentality” as he seeks to guide them through their upcoming World Cup campaign.

Lehmann, who hit the winning runs at the 1999 World Cup and snaffled the final catch at the 2003 tournament, and fellow selectors will happily change a winning side over the next six weeks.

“We’re pretty sorted where we want to go, depending on who we’re playing and where we’re playing,” Lehmann told Fox Sports on Wednesday.

“We’ve got a squad mentality.

“We’ve got to pick the right side for each and every game, and that’s what we’ll be doing.”

One of the most difficult issues for chief selector Rod Marsh and his colleagues will be settling on a first-choice pace attack, with Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins all commanding a berth.

Lehmann’s charges start their campaign with a MCG match against England on Saturday.

Captain Michael Clarke and gun allrounder James Faulkner are the only pressing concerns in Australia’s 15-man squad.

Clarke underwent hamstring surgery almost two months ago, while Faulkner suffered a side strain earlier this month.

Faulkner has resumed batting in the nets and Lehmann was reluctant to estimate when he might be available during the tournament.

“We’re going to try and get him back bowling as soon as we possibly can, but it’s a slow process,” Lehmann said.

“We know he’s not available for the first game, but we’ll see what happens from there.”

Clarke and Faulkner are both ahead of schedule in their recovery.

“The medical staff are working really well behind the scenes … they’ve done a good job,” Lehmann said.

Lehmann dismissed concerns Shane Watson was not 100 per cent, having missed three one-day internationals due to a hamstring niggle.

“He’s fine … he’s good to go,” he said.
