Kohli swaps barbs with Brad Haddin

Virat Kohli and Brad Haddin added more heat to what has been a combustible Boxing Day Test.

Kohli took off for a single in the fifth over of India’s second innings and was halfway down the wicket when he realised Murali Vijay was staying at the non-striker’s end.

David Warner’s lunging return from mid-off was well wide of Haddin and Kohli scampered back to safety.

It prompted an explosive exchange, Haddin prancing over to Kohli and applauding his running between the wickets.

“There he goes on his team again,” Haddin mocked.

“It’s all about you. It’s all about the one.”

Kohli, who was booed to the crease by some sections of the MCG crowd on day five, has been Australia’s chief antagonist throughout the four-Test series.

During his masterful 169 on day three, Kohli taunted Mitchell Johnson and later said he had no reason to respect some Australians.

“They were calling me a spoilt brat,” Kohli told reporters.

“I said ‘maybe that’s the way I am – I know you guys hate me and I like that’.

“I like playing against Australia because it’s very hard for them to stay calm.

“It really excites me and brings the best out in me. They don’t seem to be learning the lesson.”

The 26-year-old was part of the Indian contingent that gave Johnson a vocal send-off on day four, while he also offered Haddin some unsolicited advice.

Kohli made a beeline for 37-year-old Haddin when the wicketkeeper walked out to bat with the game in the balance on Monday.

As Haddin asked for and marked centre, a chirpy Kohli shadowed the batsman in a fashion more commonly associated with AFL taggers at the venue.

A total of four misconduct fines were dished out in the opening two Tests.

Don’t be surprised if there’s more after match referee Roshan Mahanama reviews the MCG bout.
