Junior to pay tribute to Hughes

Junior cricketers across Australia will pay a special tribute to Phillip Hughes during this weekend’s fixtures.

Cricket Australia have announced that the mandatory retirement score for junior players will be increased to 63 from the traditional 50 as a mark of respect.

Hughes was unbeaten on 63 batting for South Australia in a Sheffield Shield clash against NSW at the SCG on Tuesday when he was struck by a bouncer which resulted in his death.

CA chief executive James Sutherland said it was a part of wider tribute to Hughes across the game this weekend.

“We’ve recommended to clubs and associations that there will be a minute’s silence before each day’s play and players wear black armbands this weekend,” Sutherland said.

“I know some clubs are planning to paint Phillip’s baggy green number (408) into the grass on their oval.

“In junior club cricket we’ve recommended, where the retirement score is traditionally 50, this weekend the retirement score will be 63.”

All Sydney grade cricket matches have been cancelled this weekend but a decision has not been made on the next round of Sheffield Shield fixtures, which are due to start next Friday.

It is still unclear whether the first Test against India will begin as scheduled in Brisbane on Thursday.
